A little bit about me

My earliest memory of photography is a trip to Montevideo along with my parents in 1954. I was only 5 years old and while my father went to visit the Oceanographic Museum, my mother and I went for a walk around the city. The camera stayed with us and at Plaza Independencia we remembered to take a photo. It was a bellows machine, I think it marks Kodak, those complicated to put together. After several frustrated attempts, my mother asked if I did not want to try it. The end of the story is predictable. I set up such a machine, certainly by chance, we took several photos and so I had my first contact with photography.

After that, several years passed and I remember that I have been interested in clicking images at family birthdays, travels, etc ... until I decided to embrace the hobby once in the early 1970s. I was studying Engineering and I met some colleagues who photographed and revealed their own photos. I liked the idea. The next step was to borrow my old Leica from my father. It was a beautiful machine, classic, but with some difficulties to be used, because it had no photometer and with that the choice of aperture of the diaphragm was due to the experience that I was acquiring. The truth is that it was a great school.

Along with the machine came the lab, the growing interest in B&W photography, and the ever-closer look at everything going on around me. The story is long and includes, from the formation of a group of friends photographers who met every Tuesday night in my apartment, until some exhibitions and participation in photo contests. More recently I received a new impulse, thanks to old friends, that motivated me to resume the interest in showing some works, among these BICYCLES, in May of 2004 at the Museum of Arts of Rio Grande do Sul MARGS, until Felipe Dumont developed the idea of this site. In recent years my preference has been for documentary photography, especially on travel, even though photojournalism has not gone out of my head since I saw the first photos of W. Eugene Smith. Anyway, street photographer that I am, of course I have a Bressonian side and I feel extremely involved and accomplished photographing people, their habitat, their way of being and their reactions anywhere in the world wherever I walk.

Photographing for me has always been, from the beginning, to add a sensitive look to a perfect framing. If in addition the amount of existing light helps, we will certainly have at least a good photo. How long this will take, does not matter. I've waited for hours to take a picture and I would wait until today. If it's B&W or color, it does not make a difference either, but if I have to choose I'd stick with B&W, although I recognize that there are themes that ask for color and I use it. But B&W has something special, something that does not let you disperse the reading. Something of art!
